The Curriculum Corner: I Can Statements FREE downloads ABOUT The Curriculum Corner: "The development of www.thecurriculumcorner.com stems from our dream to create a site where busy teachers can go to find current, relevant, meaningful and ready to go lessons and activities that fit their classroom structure and meet these common core standards. This site is intended to always be a work in progress as new trends or ideas in instruction develop. In addition to the primary website, we have also developed a family website www.thecurriculumcornerfamily.com which provides free resources for families, preschool and kindergarten teachers. Recently we launched a site for intermediate teachers www.thecurriculumcorner456.com and have been busy creating resources to stock that site. A near future endeavor is www.theresearchcorner.com which will contain kid-friendly research passages and nonfiction graphic organizers." COMMON CORE PRACTICE TESTS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE From the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium; in both ELA and Math for students in grades 3-8 and 11; from their website: "The practice tests allow teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders to experience the features of online testing and gain insight into how Smarter Balanced will assess students’ mastery of the Common Core. However, they don’t encompass the full range of content that students will encounter on the spring 2014 Field Test and should not be used to guide instructional decisions, the consortium warns. The practice tests include constructed-response, selected-response, and technology-enhanced questions. Performance tasks, which are longer activities that ask students to apply their knowledge to solving “real-world” problems, are available for ELA and will be added for math by this fall. Scoring keys will be available July 1." Help Parents Understand CCSS The Parents’ Guide to Student Success (in English and Spanish) was developed by the National PTA in response to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts and mathematics that more than 45 states have adopted. The National PTA created the guides for kindergarten through grade 8 and two for grades 9–12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics). The guides include key items that students should be learning in English language arts and mathematics in each grade, once the standards are fully implemented. It also includes activities that parents can do at home to support their child’s learning; methods for helping parents build stronger relationships with their child’s teacher; and tips for planning for college and career (high school only).
